Behind the Work

My internship at CLF was a crash course in how environmental work actually happens, from pollution and policy to the people on the ground fighting for change. Toward the end, I worked up the confidence to pitch my own blog post on environmental justice, building on a social series I’d made earlier that summer. It covered what environmental justice means historically, what it looks like in practice, and how CLF and local organizations were tackling it across New England. The writing process was intense. Research, a lot of it. Interviews with leaders from those organizations, plus long conversations with subject matter experts and historians. Environmental law gets dense quickly, so the real challenge was turning legal and policy work into something that wasn’t word soup. Being new to it myself genuinely helped, because I wrote what I would’ve wanted to read while I was still learning it. The post survived a lot of red ink, and I came out of it a much better writer. It landed well enough that CLF kept me on as a freelancer after my internship, where I went on to write a five-part series.
